Whilst there has been a long history associated with the name of Hucknall & Linby Brass Band the recent history of the newly formed Hucknall & Linby Mining Community Band has been quite astonishing since its inception in 2008.
The band procured rehearsal facilities for an initial period of two months at the Hucknall Empire Club and had their first rehearsal on Thursday the 4th December 2008, playing on instruments borrowed from the trustees of the Riddings Band that had folded some years ago. The electrical firm from Ilkeston, SPEC, provided a new set of music stands. During the rehearsal a spectator was so moved by the playing that he donated £20 to the band funds; so after one rehearsal the band bank balance stood at £20.
On the 11th December the band had a meeting to discuss the way forward. There were two options:
1 To go to Riddings and adopt their name along with their band room and music library.
2 To stay in the Hucknall area with a new name.
The band made the decision to stay in Hucknall. The next item on the agenda was to find a new name, after much debate they came up with three names.
1 Torkard Brass
2 Hucknall Brass
3 Hucknall and Linby Mining Community Brass
The voting went in favour of number three as it was felt that it would fit into the local community with its history of mining.
On Saturday 13th December 2008 the band played outside Hucknall store of Tesco’s store for the first time under their new name. They played for two and a half hours and raised £460.
The band played at the annual Linby village Christmas Tree ceremony to a record number of people (estimated at over 600). Councillor Brothwell stated in the local press that ‘it had been a wonderful event, the best yet in the six years they had been running the event’.
On Sunday the 21st of December 2008 the band performed their first concert at the Grove Church, Farley Lane, Hucknall. Playing to a near capacity audience the entertained them with both seasonal and other light music.
